Existing Online: To control people and/or things according to prescribed rules so as to maintain the accepted level of discipline and order.
Proposed: Exercising control and professional discipline over people and/or processes according to proscribed rules in order to achieve successful outcomes.
Rationale: Simpler, applicable as a organizational/corporate value as well as a personal value.
Final: To maintain control and order through rules and discipline.
I'm adding the online definitions to each as well. The PC (hardcopy) AVI has older definitions for some, than does the online version.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it could be even simpler: "Exercising control and professional discipline over people and/or processes according to proscribed rules to achieve successful outcomes."
ReplyDeleteShould it be prescribe or proscribe?
I actually prefer the original definition for a couple of reasons. First, this value like many, can be potentially limiting and I believe the current definition allows a greater examination of what may be motivating someone’s actions. While the concepts may be used to achieve successful outcomes, how they are manifested often overlooks the illusion of what they actually do achieve. Also, making the value more professionally explicit would make it less applicable to its general use by everyone.
ReplyDeleteI think it is prescribe - the bit I am wondering about is whether "to achieve successful outcomes" is the why someone would seek to exercise the control... but I could be wrong (it has happened before!)
ReplyDeleteI like the current online definition for the reasons outlined by ronalynn. my suggestion for this value would be to modify 'maintain THE accepted level of discipline and order' to maintain AN accepted level...'
ReplyDeleteEach world-view has associated values related to how order is maintained, viz:
ReplyDeleteControl/Order/Discipline - control is via dictating, "this is how it's done or you will be disiplined."
Law/Duty - Abide by the laws and rules of our society or you will be dealt with as laid down in the laws/rules.
Law/Guide - It's preferable that you abide by the laws of our society, however, you are an inteligent human being and, therefore, you can decide, when it might be better for all concerned, to ignore a particular law.
Accountability/Ethics - We are intelligent prople. We have given considerable thought to how we should behave in this world. We have defined a code to guide us. We are all mature enough to be guided by this code. We all know our peers will judge us by how well we live by this code.
Hopefully this provides a richer context for defining the value control/order/discipline.
To maintain control and order through rules and discipline.
