32. Communal Discernment

Existing Online: To make consensus decisions, relative to long-term planning for a group or organization through prayerful reflection and honest interaction.

Proposed: Discernment
Enabling group consensus through careful reflection, and honest, open dialogue.

Rationale: No need for "long-term planning" or the use of the word "prayerful." (the latter is a legacy of the theological roots of the Hall-Tonna system). This is a means value in the New Order Cluster supporting goal values of Construction/New Order and Faith/Risk/Vision.

New Label: Communal Discernment in lieu of Discernment/Communal

Final: Eliciting communal wisdom in order to determine appropriate actions through careful reflection, and honest, open dialogue.

To make consensus decisions through personal reflection, and honest, open dialogue.

for me, to make relates to something i want to do, enabling relates to something i can 'help' others to do

also not sure about the label discernment based on wikipedias definition
Discernment is a term used in Christian tradition to describe the process of discerning God's will for one's life. In large part, it describes the interior search for an answer to the question of one's vocation...

there seems to be something in the original value around making meaningful decisions based on who i really am and what i stand for more than just 'achieving' consensus. not me at my articulate best, but another for discussion

  2. Discernment is a very important word for me. One needs to distinguish differences that are sometimes very subtle and sometimes discovered by a sense other than intellect. Also I think allowing subtle differences to be voiced is what builds sustainable agreements. For me consensus means reaching agreement from one spirit that allows differences.

I propose that we use the word agreements rather than decisions because it more powerfully requires commitment.

Suggestion: To reach sustainable agreements using the consensus process of personal reflection and open, honest dialogue.

  3. I take Dougal's point. Discerment is about deciding on future action based on discovering God's will. I'm not sure thet we should remove all the religious based values.

  4. I like the word discernment - I looked it up in my Collins dictionary and it said "the power or faculty of discriminating, judgement, acuteness" - for me this is about not jumping to conclusions or making an ill informed assessment - discernment is a considered position that is skillfully and precisely arrived at and therefore is the product of honed thinking (and listening) skills

so even as a secular person I have no issue with this historically religious term
