6. Art/Beauty

Brian's original -- ART/BEAUTY/AS PURE VALUE: experiencing and/or providing intense pleasure through that which is aesthetically appealing in both natural and person-made creations simply for the mental and emotional stimulation and the pleasure it provides.

Existing online: To experience intense mental pleasure through observing that which is aesthetically appealing in either natural or human creations.

Proposed: To experience mental and emotional pleasure through observing and appreciating aesthetics of natural creations and/or practicing the arts.

Rationale: Added the aspect of 'practice' here to expand the meaning.

Final: To derive pleasure from that which is beautiful.

2020:

Experiencing aesthetic pleasure from what you find beautiful in both human creations and nature.

  1. To me the addition of "practice" narrows rather than expands the meaning because it can be interpreted that watching or listening isn't doing (practicing) - but without the word "practice" I think the new wording is much better

  2. Why not eliminate "through observing"
that way pleasure is experienced in various ways...doing or observing.

"To experience intense mental pleasure through the aesthetics of natural or human creations."

  3. from my experience, this value with the current description,is one of the ones which requires some conversation for people to connect with.

What if the definition becomes 'Beauty' and the the description becomes

'To experience mental/ emotional pleasure, through natural and or human creations, (e.g. art, music, architecture...)

  4. I've added Brian's original definition of this value.

I see the value of Workmanship/Art/Craft as already covering the practise of art -- i.e. the creation of works of art. Whereas Art/Beauty is about deriving pleasure from that which is beautiful in the world.

Perhaps the definition could simply be: "To derive pleasure from that which is beautiful."

No need for intense as again the strength of the emotion will be covered by the priority placed on the value.
