91. Self Preservation

Existing online: To do whatever is necessary to protect yourself from physical harm or destruction in what you perceive as an alien/threatening world. To look after "number 1" in the face of threat.

Proposed: Self -Preservation Doing what is necessary to protect one’s self from either physical or financial harm or destruction in an alien world.

Rationale: simpler. Also added financial self-preservation to the meaning

Final: 91. Self Preservation - To protect myself from loss, danger, or harm.

2020:

KVD: To protect myself from loss, harm, life-threatening danger.

  1. I like the simpler one proposed by gweil and the addition of "financial" is very timely given the credit crunch etc

  2. I don't think either the financial or the physical are necessary. How about just:

"Protecting myself* from loss, danger, or harm."

    * or one's self -- do we want to use the first person or third person in these descriptors?

Note: If the person is concerned about protection from fanancial loss, it will come out in their selection of property/economics and/or economics success as well as self-preservation.

  3. i suggest the label of
    'self preservation'
    with the descriptor of:

"To protect myself from physical loss, danger, or harm in a world i experience as being threatening."

for me it is useful for people to understand that values in the self preservation cluster are more about physical protection in a world that is seen/experienced as being alien and threatening.

i see references to financial security relating more to values in the security cluster?

  4. Dougal, my feeling is that we should not refer to the cluster or world-view to which the value belongs. If we do that for one value we should do it for all of the values. If we do that it will be easy for people to bias the outcome.
